What Are The Main Operating Systems That LoL Support?

League of Legends is one of the most popular online games and has entertained the gaming community on many fronts for years.

The game is popular, easy to access, accessible, and requires little or no power to run ( machine power – PC). It can run on your old laptop or a Potato PC from 10 years ago. The fundamental requirements are that low that if you have a good internet connection and cover the bare minimum, you will be able to enjoy the game.

That said, you may think that everyone can play it and on anything. Well, unfortunately, that is not true. The Riot company has made League of Legends strictly as a PC MOBA game that runs on Windows and Mac.

Unfortunately, that means the game will not run on different operating systems and will require hard work if it’s possible to move around these restrictions.

Can you Play League of Legends on Chromebook?

In a standard way, you will get the game quickly with a few clicks from their website – NO. That is because, as we already have said, the game is available for Windows and Macs.

Chromebook does use its Operating System known as Chrome OS. However, it is Linux based, and because of that, it will not be able to run League of Legends as simply as, for example, Windows.

To give you an example, if you open the Riot website and navigate to LoL, you will be able to see a download option. But unfortunately, on Linux and Chrome OS, this one is unavailable. So that creates the first fundamental problem with the game – how to play it if you can’t download or update it?

Luckily enough, there exist alternatives that have allowed players who own Chromebooks to enjoy the game too. These other options are not as quickly used as if you use Mac or the latest Windows but are still possible and will allow you to enjoy a few matches with your friends!

How Can You Play LoL on Chromebook – The Alternative!

Before starting with the ways we have available for getting League of Legends on your Chromebook, you will have to install the Linux(Beta) onto your machine.

That is the case for the older machines where you do not have another option. Suppose you are using a newer Chromebook. Look for and use Crostini. If you are familiar with how people play emulators for Android, PlayStation, and so on, you will find it similar.

Crostini, in essence, allows a Chromebook owner to run a virtual computer on the device. It means you will have an easy time using Linux apps and getting them on the Chromebook.

By following any of the two above, you can utilize three ways of getting yourself League of Legends on your device. These ways are:

  • To use Wine to play and get LoL
  • The second one will be with LoL- Wine ( it is a bit different)

Below we will pay attention to each of these ways, and hopefully, you will be able to pick the best one for yourself and get the game!

How to Use Wine to Get League?

Assuming you are reading this, it means you have enabled the Linux(Beta) on your Chromebook, and you are ready to continue onwards.

The first thing you have to do will be to install Wine on your device. For this purpose, you have to update the system and enter a few simple commands:

  1. sudo apt update
  2. sudo apt install wine

If you want to add the 32 Bit version, you will have to input and update a few more commands. You can go with:

  1. sudo dpkg –add-architecture i386
  2. sudo apt update
  3. sudo apt-get install wine32

That will ensure you can utilize everything, even in the 32 Bits. To confirm and secure everything write the command “winecfg.” After it, you will see a window. In this window (Wine one), you can play with the settings you wish to Emulate.

When ready with the settings adjustment, you can open your internet browser and head to the League of Legends website. Download the client setup file and open the folder where you have stored it. You will have to rename it and move it to the Linux Files.

Now that you have the file and everything seems fine, you have to check if Wine can find it and run the setup file for the installation. To do so, you will have to input a command in your terminal:

  •  WINEARCH=win64 WINEPREFIX=”/home/chromeready/.wine64/” wine LeagueOfLegends.exe

After the command is input, you will see the standard installation window. You know how to proceed from it. In the rare case of an issue, close everything and input the execution command once again to repeat the process (the setup start).

If you have completed everything correctly, you will be able to play the game as the launcher will start. If you have closed it, move to Linux apps and find the League icon; click and enjoy!

The Lol- Wine Method

This one, similar to the name, has many similarities with Method one. The main difference is that with Lol- Wine method, the whole process of installing League will be a bit smoother and faster than usual.

To start it, you must utilize a bit more scripting and enter a few more commands in the terminal. The first step will be to install Wine as usual ( you can check method one). Open the terminal and enter these commands:

  • sudo apt update
  • sudo dpkg –add-architecture i386
  • sudo apt update
  • sudo apt install wine

The next move will be installing Winetricks, which will save time as it will be installing different runtime libraries. To do so, you will have to input a few more commands:

  • wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Winetricks/winetricks/master/src/winetricks
  • chmod +x winetricks
  • sudo cp winetricks /usr/bin/

At this point, you are close to being ready! All you need is to deal with the Lol- Wine installation. Once again, this happens by entering specific commands in the terminal. In this case, they are as follows:

  • wget https://m-reimer.de/wine-lol/debian/wine-lol-glibc_2.33-1_i386.deb
  • wget https://m-reimer.de/wine-lol/debian/wine-lol_5.18-1_i386.deb
  • sudo dpkg -i wine-lol-glibc_2.33-1_i386.deb
  • sudo dpkg -i wine-lol_5.18-1_i386.deb

After you complete this, the main difference between both methods starts. As you remember, we installed League set up manually in the first one. This method will use scripts to ease work and save time. The only thing you have to do is execute the following commands:

  • git clone https://github.com/kyechou/leagueoflegends.git
  • cd leagueoflegends
  • make install

After this, things are almost done, and the last few steps will be to install League and select the server your account is registered on. To do so, you will have to enter the command “leagueoflegends install” in the terminal and see the servers. Type in the number of your preferred one!

That will finalize all the processes; the last thing will be to hit the install button on the pop-up window and then find and open the game from Linux Apps, enter your credential and enjoy!

Bottom Line

Suppose you have read everything. Unfortunately, you will not be able to enjoy League of Legends even on your Chromebook. Although it may require inputting several commands, it will be all worth it once you can enjoy the game with your friends.

Remember that if you encounter any issues during the process, closing the window and stopping the process will be best. Then repeat the step or restart and go back to the start. Once again, thank you for staying with us and reading this piece!
