5 Best Supports for Varus in League of Legends

Varus has dominated the bot lane for quite some time now; his Q, especially when empowered, is so dominating that it can kill squishy champions even if they still have their HP bar. He can be built differently depending on the enemy; he can be a lethality champion empowering his abilities with many squishy enemies.

He can build on-hit items to deal with tanks or build AP items to be the best of both worlds; regardless, he will demolish the bot lane, but he needs a good support champion/player to achieve this. With that in mind, let us look at 5 of the best supports champions you can pair with Varus.

5. Morgana

Imagine you are an ADC and farming aiming to have a good game and dominate the other bot lane, but then you get hit with Morganaโ€™s Q in the early game. You think that itโ€™s no problem, but then you face an ADC varus who then proceeds to basic attack you and finish you off with his empowered Q. This usually happens when Morg + Varus is played in the bot lane. One champion hit with Morganaโ€™s Q is dead.

Best Item for Morgana

Zhonyaโ€™s hourglass

You need to rush this item so you can land your ultimate safely; landing five-person stun on the late game with your ult thanks to this item is also an excellent way for Varus to root all of them all at once with his ultimate as well.

Different Playstyles For Each Phase

Early Game Playstyle

Start with your Q and immediately find kills for Varus with your Q initiation. Once you both hit level 3, your kill pressure increases tremendously; this is the perfect time to play hyper-aggressive and abuse your long-range pokes as enemies cower under their turrets. Keeping pressure on the opposing team is relatively easy with this duo, especially in the early game.

Mid Game Playstyle

Varus builds his core items in the mid-game and can already proceed to one-shot enemies with his empowered Q. Morgโ€™s Q + W combo alone can bring an enemyโ€™s hp down to a half, and Varus can quickly finish them off with his abilities. Be careful, however, because both of you can be a glass cannon, and one unnecessary death can lead to a loss.

Late Game Playstyle

Varus can adapt his build to a late-game build if the game comes to this point. Once the late game comes, Varus would rely more on his basic attacks to be close to the enemy champions, focusing on peeling him with items like a locket and your black shield.ย

4. Leona

Leonaโ€™s ultimate is one of the best abilities that synergize with Varusโ€™s ultimate. The AOE crowd control guarantees a chain CC making it easy for Varus to finish enemies off even as early as the mid-game. The amount of slows and stuns you have on this duo is insane, so you need to abuse it, especially if you have a lead against the team.

Best Item for Leona

Evenshroud

It can be procced by your ultimate, and Varusโ€™ AOE abilities will take care of the rest.

Different Playstyles For Each Phase

Early Game Playstyle

You can play very aggressively once you both reach your level 3 power spike, and most enemies wonโ€™t be able to retaliate that many, thanks to Leonaโ€™s W, which reduces the damage she receives. Try to secure a lead during the laning phase, so Varusโ€™ value doesnโ€™t fall off as the game progresses.

Mid Game Playstyle

Only initiate kills with Leonaโ€™s or Varusโ€™ ultimate; once you set a kill with your CC abilities, try to finish off enemies before their stun even wears off. Leona can tank tons of damage, so abuse it, and Varus has a very long attack range.

Late Game Playstyle

We all love tanky support in the late game because they take tons of damage and prevent enemies from getting to us; Leona can do just that because she is a vanguard champion. Focus on peeling in the late game instead of initiating. Only use your ultimate as your initiating ability and reserve everything to peel for Varus.

3. Zyra

Zyra is one of the strongest and most annoying mages supports in the bot lane. She can burst you or poke you until she and Varus have the hp advantage over you. Her root also synergizes with Varusโ€™ abilities making them a lethal combo in the bot lane. Their combo is pretty much straightforward, hit enemies with Zyraโ€™s root, and Varus can chain CC with his ult and finish it all off with Zyraโ€™s ult as well.

Best Item for Zyra

Rylaiโ€™s Crystal Scepter

This item is very gold efficient for its value; it also synergizes with Zyraโ€™s abilities, especially from her plants that can proc the slowing effect of the item. This item also guarantees that enemies are knocked up by Zyraโ€™s ultimate.

Different Playstyles For Each Phase

Early Game Playstyle

One of the best poke champions is Zyra, thanks to her plants. You can easily proc ranged plants to poke enemies and root them as soon as they are half their HP bar, and Varus can finish them off with his empowered Q. Varus is also an excellent poke champion thanks to his low cooldown long-ranged Q.

Mid Game Playstyle

Continue poking enemies but once you hit one of your crowd control on an enemy, proceed with your full combo and finish that champion off. Keep playing aggressively with your pokes, but keep safe from champions with gap closers.

Late Game Playstyle

Both of you can burst enemies or even an entire team with your combo alone. Varusโ€™ ultimate can root one enemy and all the enemies nearby. Itโ€™s hard to hit all the roots with Varusโ€™ ultimate, but Zyra can help him thanks to her knock-up from her ultimate. Only start teamfights if you can do this combo safely and make sure nobody gets near the both of you.

2. Nami

Just before Varus pokes an enemy with his Q, Nami can empower him with her E so that it can deal bonus magic damage and slow; regardless of the build path Varus takes, Namiโ€™s enchants will always prove to be very valuable for Varus. Her ultimate is an excellent spell to peel for Varus, or it can even be used to initiate fights as chained crowd control for Varusโ€™ ultimate.

Best Item for Nami

Ardent Censer

Varus should build on-hit items when playing with Nami; her E synergizes so well with the on-hit damage of Varus, and Ardent will improve that even further; of course, the bonus attack speed is always a welcome bonus for Varus.

Different Playstyles For Each Phase

Early Game Playstyle

Poke enemies with your W or help Varus poke enemies with your E. You can play aggressively if you know how to land your bubbles well, be careful not to commit to takedowns too much because one wrong move and both the value of Nami and Varus will fall off if the enemy gains a lead on you.

Mid Game Playstyle

You have a powerful initiating ability thanks to your ultimate, and Vaurs can follow it up with his ultimate. Play aggressively if you both have your ultimates up but play safely when itโ€™s down.

Late Game Playstyle

During the late game, you can play defensively and let the enemies initiate fights and let them come at you. Once they do and catch your frontline, keep your eyes on assassins and mages that try to pick Varus off. Focus your CC abilities on them and give Varus all of your enchantments.

1. Janna

Another enchant champion with one of the best peeling abilities in the game, Janna can keep Varus safe until he reaches his item power spike. There is no champion out there that can penetrate the defenses of Janna. Her shields and CC abilities are too strong for enemies to reach Varus.

Best Item for Janna

Ardent Censer

Ardent is the best buy on Janna because of its gold efficiency and because she can proc its effects multiple times. It even synergizes with her Eโ€™s passive, making Varus hit harder.

Different Playstyles For Each Phase

Early Game Playstyle

You should play safe in the early game, but that depends on the enemy; Janna can poke enemies with her W and max this ability first. However, if they face aggressive champions with gap closers, Janna should max her E and Q first.

Mid Game Playstyle

Continue playing defensively and play around the mistakes of engaging enemies,

Late Game Playstyle

Stay at the backside and focus on peeling Varus and giving him shields and heals whenever he needs it. Try to protect yourself as enemies will try to get to you because they think itโ€™s easier to win if you are not present during team fights.
