Why Does Nobody Play Yorick?

Why Does Nobody Play Yorick?

Yorick is a strong top-lane champion that excels in split pushing and forcing the enemy to respond to him. He is quite tanky but also deals tons of damage thanks to his abilities and overall stats.

However, you might have noticed that Yorick isn’t played that often, especially in the lower ranks. He has a pick rate of only 2.8% around Platinum elo and his win rate is quite awful as well. Why is this the case? We will answer that for you right now!

Yorick is a champion that relies on splitpushing. Oftentimes, lower elo games will only rely on teamfights which makes Yorick lose his purpose. Plus, he has tons of counter-picks in the higher ranks which is why players do not want to pick him.

If you want to know about more reasons and are curious as to what Yorick does, continue reading to find out. With that said, let’s dive right in and find out why nobody wants to play Yorick in League of Legends.

What Does Yorick Do?

What Does Yorick Do?

Before we talk about why he has a low win rate and why nobody wants to play him, let’s take a look at what Yorick does. Firstly, his passive allows him to summon his minions – called Mist Walkers. Their souls will appear as you kill the lane minions and you can summon them to help you push or attack the enemy.

What Does Yorick Do With Q Ability?

Q is a basic ability that is like Garen or Nasus’ Q. He empowers his next auto attack and will use his shovel to bash the enemy. This deals additional damage to them and also acts as an auto reset.

On top of that, if there are three or more graves nearby, you can cast your Q to summon Mist Walkers. These graves appear randomly due to your passive.

What Does Yorick Do With W Ability?

Q is a basic ability that is like Garen or Nasus’ Q. He empowers his next auto attack and will use his shovel to bash the enemy. This deals additional damage to them and also acts as an auto reset.

On top of that, if there are three or more graves nearby, you can cast your Q to summon Mist Walkers. These graves appear randomly due to your passive.

What Does Yorick Do With E Ability?

E allows Yorick to throw a globule of Black Mist. Any enemy that is hit by this will be slowed for a short duration and will get marked. Marked enemies will be focused by Yorick’s ghouls and maiden. Your minions gain enhanced movement speed and will leap on the target.

What Does Yorick Do With R Ability?

Finally, Yorick’s R summons his maiden that can help you push the lane. Apart from pushing, it is a great way of fighting the enemy since you will have more damage on your side. When you summon your maiden, she will bring a few Mist Walkers with her.

After 10 seconds, you can recast this ability and free the maiden. Once you do that, the maiden will splitpush the lane she is in until she dies. This is a great way of having her push the lane while you need to either go back to base or help your team.

Why is His Winrate So Low?

Why is His Winrate So Low?

As aforementioned, Yorick has an extremely low pick and win rate. Due to this, most players that see the champion for the first time do not want to pick him since they think that he is not strong. Contrary to popular belief, Yorick is a monster in the lower elo.

However, since lower elo games tend to rely mostly on teamfights, Yorick does not excel at that until he is fed. The main purpose of Yorick is to push a side lane with his ultimate and his minions.

While you might think that you can continue pushing the lane while your team does whatever they want, this is not a good approach to take. Oftentimes, your team will lose the teamfight since it will be a 4v5 and the enemy will start pushing mid.

Even though Yorick is a strong pusher, you cannot out-push the enemy 1v5. Chances are that the enemy team will get fed by killing your team over and over again. In the lower elo, players do not know when to engage and when to back off.

Due to that, they will fight again and again hoping that something will change and they will win the fight. If you are not with your team, the enemy will get all objectives and will get extremely fed.

At that point, if they send someone to defend against you, they will either be as strong as you or stronger; making you lose all the lead you got by pushing the wave.

Apart from this, Yorick is also not that good in higher elo’s as well. Since he has a lot of strong counter-picks like Irelia, Tryndamere, Renekton, Sett, Shen, Shyvana, and Kled just to name a few, Yorick loses lane and in turn, the game.

This can also be attributed to his clunky kit. He mostly excels in split pushing. However, if you cannot do that properly due to whatever reason, you will not perform well and Yorick will end up losing his effectiveness.

Conclusion

While I believe that Yorick is a strong champion that has tons of potential, it is sadly not utilized properly. He is a beast in the lower elo but due to the nature of players in those ranks, you will lose more games than you would win.

When it comes to the higher ranks, you will notice that laning as Yorick is quite tough since he has a lot of counter-picks. Almost every meta top-laner can counter you and can carry the game while you will have a difficult time trying to keep up.

So, as of right now, Yorick has a low pick rate and a low win rate as well. Due to this, he is in the D-tier. Hopefully, he gets a buff or has a few changes made to his kit so that he can perform better and we see more of him in our games.
