Stealing a Summoner Name? What Does it Mean?

Technically speaking, this method cannot be called stealing because Riot Games themselves allow you to claim someone’s Summoner Name. From Riot’s perspective, if a player has been inactive for a long time, they have quit the game, so it’s only fair that they have this feature in the game. That being said, let me explain how it works;

If a player has been inactive for a long time, their Summoner Name will be labelled as unused. Another player can claim their Summoner Name by creating a new account or purchasing a “Summoner Name Change” from the store within the League client.

Each Summoner Name is given 6 months of inactivity protection upon the creation of the account. Every level you gain after level 6 will add another month of protection to your account. However, this is capped at level 30, which means the inactivity protection is also capped at 30 months.

In simple terms, at level 30, it would take 30 months of inactivity for Riot Games to mark your Summoner Name as unused. So make sure to log in every once in a while to ensure that your Summoner Name doesn’t get claimed by another player.

Conclusion

Whether this feature Riot has about labelling people’s Summoner Name as “unused” should exist in the game or not is up to debate. However, we cannot really blame Riot for it because if you have a high-level account, they give you more than 2 years before someone is allowed to claim your Summoner Name.
