Once you reach level 30 in League of Legends, you can start playing the ranked mode. It is a competitive mode where the stakes are extremely high and players try their best to win – ok maybe not the last part since most players just give up mid-way through the game.
However, playing ranked can be quite fun if you win the placements and get a good rank. If you place in Bronze or Silver, it can be extremely difficult and frustrating to climb the ladder. If you are a newer player or want to try out ranked for the first time, we will talk about how placements work in League of Legends.
You have to play 10 games which decide your initial rank. After playing your first ranked game, you will be given a rank depending on your MMR. If you win, you will gain a lot of League Points (LP) and climb the ladder.
If you are curious to know more about how placements work and what some of the fancy words mean like LP and MMR, continue reading to find out. With that said, let’s dive right in and take a look at how placements work in League of Legends in 2022.

What is LP?
Before we talk about anything else, let’s first discuss what LP is. League Points – or LP for short, are the number of points you get after winning each ranked game. Depending on your MMR, you might get a lot of LP or less.
Once you reach 100 LP, you will climb a division and will be one step closer to getting into a new rank. For example, if you have 90 LP in Gold 2 and win a game, you will enter Gold 1 with a few LP.
There are four major divisions in each rank. You start at the bottom (Gold 4) and slowly climb the ladder. Once you get to the highest division and reach 100 LP, you will have to win a best of 5 to achieve the new rank.
Playing the promos is quite nerve-wracking since you really want to win the game and every mistake feels like you are going to lose the game.
In short, LP is the number of points that you either gain or lose depending on whether or not you win or lose. Upon getting enough points, you can climb the ranked ladder and gain new ranks.
What Are Placements?
Now that we have talked about what LP is and how the basic ranked system works, let’s take a look at what are placements and how you can perform better in them. Placements consist of 10 games that you have to play in order to get a rank.
Whether you are playing ranked for the first time or are playing after the season reset, you will need to play the placements. Depending on your previous rank, you will get the new initial rank somewhere around that.
If you win the majority of your placements, you will either get back to your original rank or can even get higher to make the climbing process easier. While that may apply to a player that has played ranked before, what about the newer players?
If you are playing ranked for the first time, you will have to play 10 placement games to get your final rank. Depending on your MMR and your skill, you can get a decent rank like high Silver or Gold. If you are performing exceptionally well, you can even get to Platinum.

The best change that Riot Games made in recent history is how the whole placement system works. If you win games, you will gain a lot of LP. However, if you lose the game, you will not lose any LP. So, the temporary rank that you get during your placements, is the lowest that you can be once your placements are completed.
This allows played to easily climb and get to higher ranks without having to grind a lot of ranked games. If you win the majority of your placements games, you will have a high MMR and will get tough games whenever you play.
Now that we have talked about what placements are, let us discuss a bit about how you can perform better in them.

Play Your Main Role
While playing your placement games, try to play your main role that you are most comfortable with. If you are a support main, make sure that you queue up as a support so that you can play the game better.
Plus, make sure that you practice 2 or 3 champions so that you have a variety of options to choose from if some of your champions get banned. On top of that, you should try to practice a secondary role as well so that you are familiar with another role if you don’t get your primary one.
Do not try out new champions or champions that you are not comfortable with since you will not perform well and will cost your team the game. So, try to pick your main champions and carry your team to victory.
Focus During the Game
This might sound like a random point since you might think that focusing is easy during a game but that is not the case at all. Since League of Legends is an extremely popular game, the community is quite massive as well.
With that, there are tons of players that are extremely toxic and will constantly type in the chat instead of playing the game. During that time, you might be tempted to argue with them and prove your point. However, the best thing to do is to immediately mute someone that is being toxic.
This will allow you to focus on the game and perform better. If you engage in arguments with them, you will not only make the entire team angry but also not do your job in whatever role you are playing.
