League of Legends has gained massive popularity over the last decade, pulling in millions of players from all the continents, but what really makes this 5v5 multiplayer game so fun? There are a number of factors that make League of Legends exciting, the variety of champions to select from the pool, the fast-paced gameplay, its vibrant colors, and the in-game announcer function.

Announcing a player’s or team’s success gives a kind of adrenaline rush and a heightened sense of achievement making the overall gameplay more exciting. Today we are going to focus on the items that the announcer chants, and probably the most important of them is the ‘Shutdown’, but what does it really mean?

The in-game announcer says Shutdown when a player with a killing spree and a lot of gold is killed by the opposing team. It means that they have been shut down after successfully getting a lot of kills without dying and accumulating a decent amount of gold.

Difference between a “Shutdown” and “Slain”

Shutdown and Slain are probably the two announcements that you listen to more than any other, because of their frequent occurrence it’s easy to confuse them, players often think they are used randomly alternate to with each other but that’s definitely not the case. A shutdown is announced when a player who has had a successful kill streak, a decent amount of gold, and a farm, is killed by the enemy team.

It makes sense to call it a Shutdown, as that powerful and effective player, has been shut down from his killing spree. The player that has been shut down also carries a bounty on their head, so the champion that gets the Shutdown kill also receives bonus gold from the bounty.

Slain on the other hand refers to a simple kill, it’s quite straightforward, “you have slain an enemy” simply means that you have killed an enemy, and when the announcer says “an enemy has been slain” this means that one of your allies have secured a kill on an enemy champion.

Significance of Announcements

Now that we have had a quick look at some of the major announcements and what they represent, do they help in our match? Although announcements don’t make all the difference in the world they are still pretty useful. First of all, you don’t need any extra effort for these announcements, it’s inevitable that you hear them.

Try playing a match without announcements, you will probably find the game boring and sluggish, it’s always fun to have your achievements announced, it boosts your confidence, but the same will be the case with the enemy team.

Announcements help you keep your focus on the game and also increase your map awareness, you might not even notice that your bottom turret is gone without the announcer telling you, but we have to accept that with these advantages that they bring, announcements can be a little annoying sometimes.
